Teaching Methods

The teaching makes use of active communicative methods, often involving pair and groupwork activities. The course will be taught in English by an experienced native-speaker teacher.

Learning Outcomes

This is an introductory course for adults who need to learn English for use in a variety of situations. It is intended for students with no previous knowledge of English and/or those placed in basic level on the Language Center entrance test. At the end of the 60-hour course students will have the language and skills necessary to deal with basic everyday situations in English and will be prepared to start the one-year Elementary I English Language Course (CEFR level A2.1) with confidence.

At the end of the course, students will have acquired skills in English compatible with CEFR level A1. They will be able to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of concrete needs; introduce themselves and others and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have; interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly.

Syllabus

The course is based on the Face2Face Starter coursebook (see bibliography), supplemented with materials provided by the teacher for further practice, as appropriate. Grammar is an important element in the syllabus and includes areas such as the verb to be, the Present Simple and Past Simple tenses, the be going to future form, can, pronouns and possessives. Given the importance of vocabulary in successful communication, the lexical fields in this course include countries, travel and transport; work and daily routines; family; eating out; shopping; free time activities; plans. The syllabus combines the learning of new language with the development of functional skills in the form of regular listening and speaking activities and some basic writing tasks.
