SEMESTRIAL
6.0
Elective
2nd Cycle Studies - Mestrado
Recommended Prerequisites
Computer Networks; Communication Networks Engineering; Optical Communication Systems.
Teaching Methods
40 hours of theoretical and practical lectures, 20 hours of practical and laboratorial sessions.
The laboratory sessions are dedicated to characterization of components and sub-systems for WDM networks, and computational assignments.
Evaluation: computational work – 20%; characterization of components and sub-systems – 20%; final exam – 60%.
Learning Outcomes
Wide scope knowledge about the actual state of development of optical networks, with emphasis on the networks with routing in the wavelength domain (2nd generation) and switching in the optical layer (3rd generation), and about the methods used for planning and dimensioning optical networks.
After attending this curricular unit, the students should have acquired the scientific and technical knowledge required for the design and modeling of optical networks, and should be capable of understanding and following the scientific and technological development in this domain.
Work Placement(s)
NoSyllabus
Optical layer and WDM network elements. OTN and clients of the optical layer. Control and management. Protection and restauration. Design of WDN networks (lightwave topology design, routing and wavelength assignment). Access networks. Switching in the optical layer. Design of the transmission layer and deployment issues.
