Teaching Methods

In Scientific Communication, there is a continuous assessment based on class performance (5%) and a written test (5%). In the writing of the thesis proposal, a (tentative) supervisor is assigned in the beginning of the academic year, in accordance with the research interests of the student. During this time, the student reads articles and conducts research work. The student prepares a preliminary proposal, and gives an oral presentation in the beginning of the 2nd semester. The assessment consists of the public defense of the thesis project with a jury (90%). The defense has a duration of at most 2 hours, including an oral presentation lasting up to 20 minutes.

Learning Outcomes

This unit has two moments: Scientific Communication and Writing of the Thesis Proposal. Scientific Communication develops scientific communication skills, both orally and in writing, competency acquisition in oral and written communication, knowledge of a foreign language, communication with non-experts, self-criticism and self-assessment. In the writing of the thesis proposal, the goal is to deepen the knowledge of a particular research topic, to identify problems to be considered, methods to solve them, and to prepare a written proposal on the Thesis, which must include:
• The presentation of the objective of the thesis, including the topic to be investigated
• The contextualization of that topic within Information Science and Technology, the state of the art and prospects of development of scientific knowledge in the relevant area
• The potential contribution of the thesis to the scientific knowledge in the area
• The work plan to accomplish the objective of the thesis.
