Recommended Prerequisites
Electromagnetism, Waves and Propagation, Electric Circuits
Teaching Methods
There are three types of classes: theoretical (lectures); theoretical-practical classes with problem solving and some basic experiments; seminar classes for the students to present and defend their assessment works.
Learning Outcomes
To understand important concepts of Electromagnetic Compatibility which are fundamental for the design of electrical systems and devices, from the point of view of the equivalent electric circuit, in order to minimize electromagnetic interference. These concepts will be applied to a frequency range covering conduction and radiation, according the applicable standards.
Work Placement(s)
NoSyllabus
Introduction to Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC). Electric dimensions and units in EMC. Applicable standards. Power loss in cables. Load match. Electromagnetic theory and review on wave propagation. Reflections and refractions. Non-ideal behaviour of components: resistance, inductance and capacity at low and high frequencies. Crosstalk. Equivalent electric circuit of cables and PCB lands. Filters and common-mode inductances (chokes). Mechanical switches and electrical arc suppression. Shielding principles and efficiency.
