Recommended Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of Physics and Mathematical Analysis 1 and 2.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical classes with exposition and demonstration of basic concepts, often using audiovisual media and visits to the Water Resources and Environment Hydraulics Laboratory of the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Coimbra.

Theoretical-Practical classes where students solve exercises of a more applied character, with greater volume of computations and perform, in group, laboratory experiments that are later object of a report.

Learning Outcomes

The main objective of the course is to provide students with a solid and autonomous basic knowledge on the behavior of a fluid at rest or in flow, for environment engineering applications. It is structured through a succession of subjects ranging from dimensional analysis to physical properties of fluids, from the analysis of stress distribution in the fluid at rest or in motion, ensuring the introduction of basic concepts and also an important set of corresponding applications. All of these subjects focus on the analysis of transport phenomena (momentum, energy and mass) that occur in fluid flows in the most diverse practical applications inherent to the practice of the environmental engineering.
