Learning Outcomes

- Identification of the main basis and purposes of Regulatory Law along with the analysis of the different types, rationales, strategies, and means encompassed by regulation as well as the respective role of the State.

- Evaluation of the practice of regulatory systems within selected economic sectors;

- Confer skills and stimulate critical analytical thinking on the economic domain, particularly as to the (good) functioning of markets and the legitimacy of the produced outcomes

Syllabus

Evolution of the State: from the Liberal State to the Regulatory State, in particular; disengagement of the State; independent regulatory authorities; services of general economic interest;

Regulation: political and economic theories of regulation; juridical concepts; powers and roles conferred on public regulatory bodies/agencies; sources of regulatory law.   

Examination of specific areas in the regulatory field: antitrust and competition regulation; financial regulation; regulation of infrastructure sectors.
