Teaching Methods

Practical -theoretical lectures

Use an audio-visuals means to explain the main theories and principals of the subjects. In addition, some problems are solved to explain the subjects studied. Use of Plaxis and Slide codes to make stress-strain analysis and the study of the percolation of the water and stability of earth dams. Technical visit to one dam in construction.

Learning Outcomes

This unit intends that the student acquires relevant expertise and tools to allow the process of technical decision,  in terms of conception, design, construction and observation of dams. At the end of the course the student should be able to design and control the execution of.earth dams (namely earthworks, drains and filters), concrete dams and other hydraulic works.

Work Placement(s)

No

Syllabus

I) Selection of the dam type

Classification of the type. Physical factors which control the dam selection.

II) Foundation and construction materials

Objective of the investigations. Data collection and sources of information. Classification and characterization (soils and rocks). Characterizations works (mechanical and geophysical survey)

III) Rock-fill and earth dams.

Portuguese experience review. Types of dams. Subjects which control the dam selection. Design of drainage devices. Study of water flow. Treatment of foundations and abutments. Stability analysis. Observation of the behavior. Instrumentation. Legislation. Practical cases.

II) Concrete dams.

Types. Actions and analysis of the stability. Foundations and treatments.

V) Slope stability.

VI) Observation and security of works
