Teaching Methods

Theoretical-practical classes where the concepts, principles and fundamental theories related to foundation design and strengthening are presented with detail and where the students solve exercises from the unit’s practical material, with guidance from the teacher.

Learning Outcomes

This curricular unit aims to provide the students with knowledge in the design of new foundations, and also in the strengthening of existing foundations, with particular emphasis on its application to the structural rehabilitation of buildings, bridges and other special structures.

The curricular unit shall conduct to the consolidation of knowledge, previously acquired in other study cycles, regarding the design of regular foundations. The students shall acquire knowledge on the techniques to evaluate foundation's performance and also on the criteria to choose the solutions appropriated to the existing ground conditions, loading and type of structure.

Work Placement(s)

Syllabus

The syllabus were developed in order that at the beginning of the semester, concepts learned in previous study cycles regarding design of common foundations are reviewed and consolidated. On the following topics, the construction techniques, design methods and quality control of deep foundations are presented, providing the students with the knowledge required for decision making on the adequate solution, its development and implementation.

Regarding to the chapter on foundation strengthening, the information will be provided on an area deemed as a priority for this curricular unit. It will focus on the identification of foundation pathologies and definition of adequate strengthening techniques. This will allow the students to acquire the skills and knowledge deemed relevant to this area of intervention.
