Teaching Methods

Detailed presentation of the theory, accompanied by the resolution of illustrative examples and exercises by the teacher.  Autonomous problem solving in which the students work out exercises and problems of theoretical and practical application with the guidance of the teacher.

Learning Outcomes

The two courses of Strength of Materials continue the explanation of concepts and methodologies of structural analysis, which is initiated in the Mechanics courses. Besides the basic principles, which are valid for all kinds of structures, the case of framed structures and specially the slender members they are made of are addressed in detail.  Methods for the computation of stresses and deformations caused by the internal forces (axial and shear forces and bending and torsional moments) are studied. Furthermore, the concepts of structural stability, energy conservation theorems, and the most important methods of structural analysis, which will be deepened and systematized in the courses of Theory of Structures, are introduced.

After being approved in this course, the student shall be able to perform analysis and safety assessment of simple framed structures and be familiar with fundamental principles and methods of structural analysis.
