Teaching Methods

Lectures with the help of audiovisual media where concepts, principles and theories are presented. Practical exercises that meet all the needs of students are solved, with guidelines provided. In TP lectures guidance to solve some practical exercises is provided by professors. The practical classes are also used to support the students’ work on the practical assignments that are considered for grading.

Learning Outcomes

This course aims to provide students with:

- the knowledge of the concepts, methodologies, and fundamental techniques of regional and urban planning,

- understanding of the regional and urban planning processes, and

- capacity to participate effectively in teams of regional and urban planning.

• Concept of spatial planning. Spatial planning purposes.

• History of regional planning.

• Methodologies for spatial planning. Strategic Planning. The Territorial Model.

• Demographic Analysis. Demographic indicators. Demographic projections: trends extrapolation method, the cohort survival method.

• Socioeconomic analysis. Socioeconomic indicators. Economic projections: economic base theory model.

• Urban Planning. Urban analysis. Urban indicators.

• Public facilities planning. Generation and analysis of intervention alternatives: multicriteria and cost benefit analyses.

• Transportation planning. The transportation system. The planning process. The four-step trasnportation model. Demand analysis over the project lifetime.

• Network design. Application of optimization technique.

• Portuguese legislation in the field of spatial planning.

• Spatial Development Policy and Sustainable Development.
