Recommended Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of mathematic analysis, chemistry and mechanics.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical concepts and generic knowledge related to the themes defined in the course syllabus, case study and resolution of application exercises. At the same time, demonstrations of laboratory tests are carried out in practical classes.

Students are encouraged to study the practical application of theoretical concepts, performing laboratory work that is covered in the course evaluation.

Learning Outcomes

The main objective of this unit is to provide students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the materials most commonly used in construction, acquiring basic knowledge about those materials. Since this is the first contact of the students with construction materials, it is intended that they acquire a global view on this subject, but still focusing on some materials which are essential for civil engineering.

It is intended that students acquire practical knowledge, based on laboratory experience, with regard to production processes, quality control and standardization applicable to building materials. Materials  characteristics, performance and main applications will be analyzed.

It is intended that students develop skills of synthesis and analysis, oral and written communication, problem solving, critical thinking, independent learning and practical application of theoretical knowledge.

Work Placement(s)

Syllabus

The course will present the main properties and types of applications, production process, quality verification, main pathologies, legislation and standardization applicable to the various types of building materials.

Emphasis will be placed on environmental concerns related to the production and management of materials, including reuse of construction and demolition waste (RCD), reduction of environmental impacts, minimization of energy consumption and carbon release.

The main topics covered are as follows:

• Classification and behavior of materials

• Natural stones – structural and non-structural applications

• Binders

• Mortars and Concrete and their constituents

• Steels

• Ceramic and glass products

• Wood and its derivatives

• Polymeric materials

• Paints and varnishes

• Technological innovations and new materials.
