Basic knowledge of mathematics, chemistry and mechanics.
Teaching of theoretical concepts and general knowledge concerning the issues set forth in the syllabus, including case studies and practical application of problem solving. During the course, students are able to observe demonstrations od relevant laboratorial tests, performed during the classes.
The main objective of this unit is to provide students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the materials most commonly used in construction, acquiring basic knowledge about those materials. Since this is the first contact of the students with construction materials, it is intended that they acquire a global view on this subject, but still focusing on some materials which are essential for civil engineering.

Mixing water for mortars and concrete
Study of the composition of concrete
Ceramics and glass
Wood and derivatives
Paints and varnishes
Technological innovations and new materials
Resolution of practical problems in the classroom: 30.0%
