Teaching Methods

Theoretical lectures on the history and present of the Civil Engineering. Talks proffered by invited entities or individuals on topics related to the practice of the profession of Civil Engineer.

Learning Outcomes

The main goal is to make the students aware of the profession they have chosen. With that purpose, information will be provided on the evolution and development of the fundamentals of Civil Engineering and it will be sought to make the students conscientious of the scientific and professional challenges in each domain of Civil Engineering.

1. Historic evolution of the Civil Engineering

The Antique World; the evolution of the construction in the Middle Age; the beginning of the Civil Engineering in the XVII and XVIII centuries; the Industrial Revolution; the present situation; the future perspectives.

2. The large Civil Engineering works in Portugal

Bridges; dams; harbor facilities; railways; highways and airports; tunnels; etc.

3. The different domains of the Civil Engineering

Structures and structural mechanics; hydraulics; construction; spatial planning and transport engineering; geotechnics.

4. The practice of Civil Engineering

Ethic and deontological aspects.
