Recommended Prerequisites

Are considered to be basic points for this Unit all the comprehensive and integrated knowledge that they have acquired in the basic sciences biomedical and general clinical skills are essential: medical pathology, pathology, surgery, neurology, psychiatry, oncology, pediatrics, among others.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical classes. Development of program contents with audiovisual equipment, for the essential aspects considered relevant to basic medical education, looking for critical mind.

Theoretical-practical/practical classes. Discussion of clinical cases selected, according its pedagogical features and translational peculiarities of basic science and clinical

Learning Outcomes

With this Unit it is intended that students acquire knowledge to being able to recognize that medicinal plants and/or supplements containing plants although considered “natural products” they are not free of clinical effects and risks in healthy subjects and patients.

For this purpose the maingoals are:

1.Knowledge:

-Major Bioactive compounds

-Major Medicinal plants commonly used in Portugal

- Medicinal Plants and organic-systemic pathology

-Critical conditions in clinical practice

2.Skills:

For Frequently Medicinal Plants and / or supplements

-Recognize adverse effects and allergic reactions

-Recognize risk groups

-Recognize situations with potential clinical benefit

3.Attitudes:

Develop clinical rationality to a widespread population reality under medical responsibility.

Syllabus

Introduction: the use of Herbal Medicine from a traditional ancestor level to pharmacological, clinical and scientific knowledge.

General principles of bioactive compounds of Medicinal herbs.

Types of medicinal plants most often consumed in Portugal and Europe and the current scientific knowledge.

Potential adverse reactions, allergic and plant-drugs interactions.

Medicinal plants in specific clinical situations of diseases:

-Respiratory pathology

-Allergic pathology

-Gastrointestinal pathology

-Cardiovascular pathology

-Neural-psychiatric pathology

-Endocrine and metabolic pathology

-Genitourinary pathology

-Skin pathology

-Osteoarticular pathology

-Clinical specific conditions: pediatrics, geriatrics, oncology, pregnancy, surgery, and the polypharmacy patient
