Teaching Methods

Lectures on the topics as detailed in the syllabus and in-class discussion on the relevant topics, as a way of assessing to what extent contemporary Public Administration is indebted to the historical perspective.  

Learning Outcomes

As far as contents and critical reflection are concerned, students are expected to: a) understand the roots of Portuguese Public Administration since the rise of the country as a nation; b) understand the rationality underlying the successive Administration models implemented in Portugal; c) view the contemporary shape of historical Administration against its historical background; d) promote the skills needed to appreciate the rationality of today’s Administration model.

II – Period of formation and consolidation of the Administration of the Kingdom

III - Period of Expansion and Improvement of Public Administration in the Ordinances era

IV - Period of Police Administration (Polizeiverwaltung)

V - Period of Liberal Administration

VI - Period of Social Administration

VII - Period of Regulatory Administration.
