Recommended Prerequisites

Basic knowledge in 'Organic Chemistry' and 'Physical Chemistry'.

Teaching Methods

The teaching methodology of this c.u. is adapted to the school set (2hours T). In class are covered theoretical aspects with practical elements (formed elements identifications of wood biopolymers, etc.). The discipline has a theoretical complement, which consists of a work on literature review to realize in a group of students and resulting in the development of a small monograph on a theme proposed. The lectures are supported by educational material available on the e-learning.

Learning Outcomes

This c.u. aims:

-to provide students the knowledge on the chemistry and structure of wood and its components; with the knowledge gained in this course, students should, based on the establishment of structure-property relationships, understand and explain the physical and chemical properties of wood as well as phenomena and chemical reactions involved in its processing

- sensitize students to the potential offered by biomass as a renewable source of precursors for new materials, chemicals and energy

At the end of the course, the student should:

- know the chemistry and structure of wood and its components, as well as the chemical processes of transformation of wood into pulp and paper and the chemistry of cellulose derivatives.
