Teaching Methods

During their “Theses” work the student should be encouraged to develop a scientific work of excellence. Therefore, the student will be closely monitored by their supervisors, which shall help them in the completion of their studies as predicted in the work programme that was initially proposed. Thus, the student should make periodic presentations, in which the results they have obtained are discussed, and where future projects are proposed.

Learning Outcomes

In the curricular unit “Thesis” it is intended for the students to develop a research project with high scientific and technical merit. This project should be fulfilled under the guidance of at least two teachers/researchers affiliated to two of the participating institutions. The dissertation should be an original work with high scientific impact, developed mostly by the student. It is also intended that during the development of the work for their doctoral theses the student acquire the skills that will allow them to understand the research process, including the data analysis and experimental component, as well as their disclosure, through the publication of scientific articles in international peer reviewed journals. At the end of this curricular unit, the student should have acquired skills that will allow them to start an autonomic and independent scientific career, that involves the scientific guidance of pos-graduate students, as well as coordinate research projects.

Syllabus

This curricular unit intends to provide the student the competencies to develop an original scientific work with high scientific relevance, in the field of ageing and chronic diseases. The student should broach an original scientific question, identifying and adequately using the technical and technologic means required to test the hypothesis. Thus, the student should have contact with several different techniques and methodologies, which will allow them to have an integrative and interdisciplinary perspective of the research process. During the development of their work, the student will be regularly and closely followed by supervisors, who will provide guidance for the student in matters concerning laboratory tasks, experimental design and interpretation of the obtained results. The students will also be encouraged to actively participate in disclosing their work, in the form of scientific articles in international peer reviewed, and also in presentations at scientific meetings.
