Teaching Methods

Classes are theoretical-practical, appealing strongly to the participation of students. The teacher proceeds to theoretical systematization and presentation of issues and themes of the program, promoting the debate about the bibliography. The course is organized based on the weekly discussion topics and reference texts. Classes encourage strong involvement of students, who are expected to submit materials and different types of problems for discussion in class, allowing the operationalization of theoretical issues.

Learning Outcomes

This course examines the patterns, processes, and consequences of international migration for immigrants and/or refugees and the receiving countries where they settle. We will review key theories of international migration, explore issues pertinent to contemporary immigration policy, and assess how migrants’ and refugees’ characteristics and host country conditions affect integration. The course intends to be interdisciplinary and will review different theories and empirical approaches in demography, sociology, economics and political science. During the course, we will discuss how to measure and model migration and refugee processes and we will examine different theories on voluntary migration and refugees and their determinants and consequences. It is intended that students acquire a reconnaissance capacity of the nature and the characteristics of the current migratory waves, its causes and consequences in order to find ways to reflect and act on them.
