Recommended Prerequisites

Basic Geology; Sedimentology; Stratigraphy; Structural Geology; Tectonics; Geological mapping.

Teaching Methods

1. Lectures exposing and criticising works and documents that comprehensively address the problems and realities of  the Geology of Portugal.

2. Seminar classes where students, in groups, will examine and present those issues in detail.

3. Field classes for the observation and recording of relevant geological data.

Learning Outcomes

The course aims to

1. Analyse and synthesise the geologic evolution of Portugal (also in the wider context of Iberia).

2. Study geological materials, their characteristics, their formation/deposition conditions, their typical faunas and floras, their evolution and setting in a tectonic context and in a universal chronostratigraphic scale.

3. Characterise some problems of the geologic organisation, inserted in the evolutionary context and the global tectonic picture.

Skills to develop:

1. Instrumental: competence in analysis and synthesis, skills to solve problems, competence in oral and written communication.

2. Personal: competence in critical thinking and competence in temwork.

3. Systemic: competence in applying theoretical knowledge in practice, competence in planning and managing, concern for quality, competence in autonomous learning.
