Lectures will always be supported by texts previously made available to students. Whenever pertinent, an interdisciplinary approach will be used, resorting to examples from painting and music. Whenever possible guest authors will participate in classes.

Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to differentiate a literary from a non-literary text. It is expected that throughout the semester students will develop the ability to analyze texts by different authors, identifying different styles, and situating them in the context of Portuguese society and culture.

Syllabus

Starting with news pieces and chronicles by some Portuguese-language authors, this course aims to study the differences and similarities between non-literary and literary texts. In order to do so, short stories by José Saramago, António Lobo Antunes, Lídia Jorge, Inês Pedrosa and Madalena Caixeiro will also be analyzed. As an open window on contemporary reality, the chronicle provides insights into several aspects of Portuguese-speaking cultures, as well as awareness of the major characteristics of the work of the authors selected.

1. Chronicle: characteristics

2. From the chronicle to the short story

3. Journalism, Literature and Ideology
