Teaching Methods

Expository and interative methods, involving the students active participation in class discussions and practical exercises.

Students are also expected to prepare two weekly written assignments at home (on either an open topic or a topic related to issues studied in class) and handed them in at the end of each class.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students should be able to

(i) understand the communicative complexities that they may experience when living in any Portuguese-speaking community; and

(ii) express themselves fluently in the different areas of their daily (social, academic and professional) life, both in orally and in writing.

Syllabus

1.             Presentation and discussion of cultural topics, with a focus on everyday life in contemporary Portugal, suggested by the teacher and also related to the students’ interests – the topics may vary every year depending on the profile of the group;

2.             Reinforcing knowledge  of the structures and use of European Portuguese, together with a broad reflection on the symbolic dimension of language;

3.             Oral and written production of various kinds of texts.
