Teaching Methods

Practical classes focusing on the reading, interpretation and discussion of texts. Students will be provided with a corpus of selected texts which will be the object of linguistic and cultural analysis. In addition to students oral participation in classes, students will be asked to present individual research papers.

Learning Outcomes

In a first contact with Portuguese-language literatures, students are expected to become acquainted with relevant Lusophone authors (Portuguese in particular) and learn how to contextualize them. The main goal is to analyze texts, using an approach that interconnects language, history and culture. Students should be able to interpret and comment on short texts, in different registers, and become familiar with indirect means of signification (connotation, comparison, metaphor...).

Syllabus

1. Portuguese-language Literature: an introduction. Literary production within the European tradition and its development in colonial spaces. Current aspects of cultural diversity expressed in a common language.

2. Poetry in Portuguese: major Portuguese and Brazilian poets. Literary and historical contextualization of authors; interpretation and analysis of texts; expressive particularities of poetic language.

3. Literary prose in Portuguese: reading, interpretation and discussion of short stories/short texts by contemporary African and Portuguese authors. Fiction as a representation of different cultural realities; observation of the different uses of language.
