Teaching Methods

(Reading and discussion of long, demanding texts on complex social, academic and professional topics. Students will also have contact with texts from various periods of the history of the Portuguese language.

Students will carry out systematization exercises on all the grammatical/structural topics studied.

Since students already have a solid knowledge of Portuguese, the topic of linguistic variation will be addressed.

Learning Outcomes

This course will enable students to develop their speaking and writing skills, to reflect on the use of language, and to understand and produce increasingly complex texts, according to the objectives of CEFR for level C1.

 

At the end of the course, students should demonstrate that they

1. can produce fluent and well-structured speech in different communication situations;

2. can interpret and produce different types of written texts with some degree of complexity;

3. have a good command of the lexicon and grammatical structures of Portuguese;

4. have a good command of some aspects of variation in Portuguese so that they can understand more clearly some features of contemporary language.

A. Thematic units and associated lexicon:

1. Coimbra and its traditions

2. Contemporary Portugal

 

B. Linguistic structures and topics:

1. Nouns and adjectives: gender and number inflection (revision): compounds; forms ending in -ão and –l.

2 Pronouns: connecting the different subclasses (mostly personal, possessive and demonstrative) with personal deixis; reinforcing the use of other subclasses.

3. Verbs: subjunctive compound tenses, infinitive and gerund compound; specificities of some tenses and periphrastic constructions.

4. Degree: nouns (augmentative and diminutive); adjectives and adverbs – irregular and anomalous forms; less common synthetic superlatives.

5. Specific vocabulary.

6. Sociolinguistic issues, norm and variation.
