Recommended Prerequisites

Base course units in Geology.

Teaching Methods

Brief theoretical-practical exposition of the concepts and principles pertaining to geological mapping. Field work, for the period of one week, in small groups, where the programmatic contents previously described are developed. Field work is undertaken with guidance as well as on an autonomous base.

Learning Outcomes

To develop and increase knowledge on the techniques and procedures involved in the execution of geological mapping.

To undertake geological mapping in new geological environments; production of a final map and other related elements.

Acquiring capabilities in synthesis and analysis, representation and transmission of information, problems solving, critic reflection, autonomous comprehension of new situations, practical application of knowledge (including the one acquired in other course units).

Work Placement(s)

No

Syllabus

Theoretical exposition of: activities to develop in the terrain, field equipment and general framework (geographical and geological) of mapping localities.

Consolidation of knowledge at the level of positioning techniques in the terrain and compass manipulation. Measurement of geological coordinates.

Development of intensive field work in small groups for a straight week.

Geological mapping at a scale of 1:10000 of an area with approximately 2,5 km2. Mapping techniques in the terrain. Map construction. Geological boundaries and other relevant elements to map construction.

Outcrop description. General elements concerning the outcrop. Description of geological and structural features.

Elaboration of the final map, profiles and geological report (after the field work).
