Teaching Methods

Theoretical and practical sessions. The presentation of theoretical contents will be accompanied by the analysis of images and, occasionally, texts to be discussed by the students. Whenever possible, practical sessions will include visits to local museums and spaces where students can observe relevant works of art.

Learning Outcomes

The fundamental goal of this course is to to enable students to acquire a basic knowledge of Portuguese art in a broad chronological frame, between the 12th and the 20th centuries. Through a comprehensive and inclusive approach to the many influences and specificities that shaped Portuguese art over these centuries, it is expected that students will be able to identify and understand the basic characteristics of its various periods, relating them to the geographical, historical, and cultural context in which they developed, and also that they become acquainted with works and authors of reference. By encouraging a critical approach to the topics of study, and promoting direct contact with works of art, it is intended that students will be able to interconnect the knowledge acquired in other courses of this program, and to experience Portuguese art and heritage in an informed way.
