Teaching Methods
The methods used are those recommended for teaching a non-native language:
• Theoretical explanation;
• Exercises for practicing the pronunciation and recognition of vowel and consonant sounds;
• Exercises for recognizing the correspondence between sound and spelling;
• Exercises in pronunciation: hearing and repeating words, phrases and texts;
• Teacher-student and student-student verbal interaction;
• listening comprehension exercises;
• Exercises to develop spontaneous production.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
i) Establish the relationship between graphic and phonic units in a systematic way and without difficulty;
ii) Pronounce in a clear and comprehensible manner a repertoire of phrases on familiar topics;
iii) Understand the information conveyed in standard speech on current matters or familiar topics;
iv) Interact in various routine situations with some degree of spontaneity.

• Vowel and consonant sounds in standard Portuguese;
• Relationship between phoneme and grapheme;
• The main stress in verbs and non verbs;
• Tonic and atonic vocalism;
• Glides and falling oral and nasal diphthongs;
• Hiatuses and rising diphtongs;
• Phenomena of vowel alternation;
• Rules for placing the accent mark;
Intonation: contrasts between declarative, interrogative and exclamatory sentences.
