Teaching Methods

Theoretical classes: detailed explanation, using multimedia resources, of concepts, basic principles, models and fundamental theories of Structural Geology. Analysis of situations that illustrate reference cases.

Theoretical and practical classes: where the students contact with techniques of geological analysis and representation.

Field trip for outcrop observations of geological structures. In the field the students will develop methodologies of  geometric and kinematic analysis.

Learning Outcomes

Introduction to the use of a language and a methodology for analysis of characteristics and stages of deformation of rocks and rock masses. Introduction to the study of mechanical behavior and analysis of the architecture of rocky materials. Introduction to the organization and interpretation of geological models.

Work Placement(s)

No

Syllabus

I-Non-tectonic structures.

II-Rock mechanics: concept of stress and strain/deformation; strain analysis; measures of strain.

III-Mechanical behavior of rock materials:

III.1-Brittle deformation: fractures, joints and faults; the domain of geological fracturing and faulting; mechanics of fracturing and faulting; classifications; association of fractures/faults with other geological structures.

III.2-Ductil deformation: folds; the description of folds; classifications; recognition and analysis of folds; kinematic analysis of folds.

IV-Foliations and lineations imposed by deformation: relationship between cleavage, lineation and folds; overlapping folds.

V-Elementary techniques of structural geology: construction and analysis of contour maps; methods of graphic and geometric analysis of geological maps; use of stereographic projections in geology; the Mohr circle stress diagram.
