Teaching Methods

•              Listening comprehension exercises;

•              Text comprehension/interpretation;

•              Teacher-student and student-student verbal interaction;

•              Verbal interaction in simulated everyday situations using different language registers;

•              Theoretical explanation;

•              Application of rules and topics addressed in language use situations.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

(i)            understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance provided they are clearly articulated;

(ii)           understand advertisements, messages and directions clearly uttered;

(iii)          understand the subject of a discussion when it is carried out clearly;

(iv)          communicate in the context of routine tasks;

(v)           engage with relative ease in brief conversation in routine situations and on matters of interest understanding the essential points;

(vi)          deal with a limited number of direct questions posed after a presentation;

(vii)         describe their family, other people, living conditions, educational background and the current or most recent job;

(viii)        make a short rehearsed presentation on a relevant issue in their daily life;

(ix)          explain opinions, plans and actions.

Syllabus

In addition to applying and using the grammar contents addressed in Structures of the Portuguese Language, the following items will be covered:

a) Everyday verbs:

TOMAR (banho/café/cuidado), TIRAR, (fotografias/a roupa), FAZER (amigos/as malas/tempo), PASSAR (um bom bocado/bem/por X lugar/a ferro/um cheque/ férias), APANHAR (sol/gripe/o autocarro/X do chão), PERDER (um jogo/ a carteira/ o comboio/ tempo), VIRAR (à direita/ a página), PARTIR (para X lugar/uma perna/ um copo), FICAR (bem/ contente/ em casa/ longe)

b) Lexical semantics:

•              Antonyms

•              Synonyms

c) Sociolinguistic and pragmatic aspects:

•              Forms of address in Portugal

•              Personal and place deictics

•              Basic illocutionary acts

d) Textual typology:

•              Descriptive text

•              Dialogical text

•              Narrative text

•              Expository text with expression of viewpoints
