Teaching Methods

Lectures, labs, hands-on problem solving, home assignments and students’ oral presentations of homeassignments. A Flipped Room methodology is applied which means that lectures are normally given asynchronously via internet while labs, hands-on problem solving and oral exams are held in “real-time” in classroom.

Examination and evaluation is made through Home assignments, oral presentation of home assignments, and individual oral examination.

Learning Outcomes

Understand design, function and basic mechanisms of advanced machine components such as clutches planetary and worm gears, rolling bearings and journal bearings.

Understand design, function and basic mechanisms of systems of machine components such as transmissions and hydraulics.

Understand how machine components interact in systems

Know about ongoing research and development activities in the field of machine elements

Skills and abilities

Be able to use modern mathematical models and tools for the analysis, prediction and dimensioning of machine components.

Be able to select machine components from an energy, environment, service life and cost perspective.

Be able to dimensioning, analyze and predict the function of systems of machine elements

Have the ability to select the most suitable components for a system by taking into account its impact on humans, environment, energy usage and climate.

Work Placement(s)

No

Syllabus

In this course take up more advanced aspects of the most common machine elements. Machine elements such as different transmissions, motors. bearings are treated from a perspective which include strength, energy efficiency, cost, environmental impact and service life.

The system perspective is also addressed in the course. This means that the system of machine elements rather than individual components is treated.

The fundamental aim of the course is to give students sufficient knowledge of machine elements and machine element systems so that s/he himself can dimension and select components. Calculations that aims to make the dimension and selection is therefore key. Students will use different software such as multi-physics tools and tools for solving time dependent differential equations.

Research and development in the field of machine elements at companies and universities, are also highlighted.

Assessment Methods

Assessment
Examination and evaluation is made through Home assignments, oral presentation of home assignments, and individual oral examination: 100.0%
