Teaching Methods

The course is composed in a way that student can simultaneously gain knowledge from proposed sheets, that

he or she gets the material in front of every course. The laboratory work is composed in a way to upgrade the

material from the theoretical course. In courses active student contribution with questions and comments is

needed.

For positive and successful execution of student obligations and connecting student in studying work the

presence in theoretical and practical course on regular basis is needed (presence at least 80% of courses), use

of extra learning material and additional preparation after working in laboratory environment and active work

on practical courses.

The exam consists of a written part and oral questioning (50%/50%).

Laboratory work (100%).

Overall grade is from exam/laboratory work (100%/100%).

Learning Outcomes

The fundamental syllabus goal is to present the students with basic knowledge on tribological contact in mechanical systems in relative motion. The course presents the importance, role and properties of contact surfaces, materials and surroundings. Furthermore, the influence of the components of a tribological system and contact conditions on the properties of friction and tear is explained. The course covers the types and the role of lubricants, as well as their influence on the quality of lubrication, friction, and on various friction and wear mechanics. In relation to these topics, the analytical techniques available for the analysis of surface

Syllabus

1. Introduction: definition, topics, course framework, the importance of tribology in mechanical systems and the economic aspects of tribology. 2. Basic characteristics of contact surfaces. 3. Basics of tribological contacts. 4. Lubricants: types of base oils and additives, criteria for the selection of lubricants. 5. Quality of lubrication. 6. Friction: causes of friction in mechanical systems, rules and exceptions, models and influences, a modern view on the sources of friction, friction of lubricated contacts, influences, friction of dry contacts and characteristic solid materials for non-lubricated contacts and dry lubricants, friction characteristics for different materials. 7. Types of wear and their basic characteristics. 8. Basics of damage and surface characterization: examples of typical surface damages, types and techniques for the characterization of surfaces and damages on machine elements, quality of lubrication and lubricants.
