Teaching Methods

The c. unit will emphasize the debate and critical analysis of reference texts, also behaving moments of presentation and deepening of specific content by teachers. In each content of the program will be developed discussion forums, anchored on the objectives and contents of the c. unit, prepared and energized by the students in line with the analytical concerns of their doctoral theses (to shape in the thesis project due at the end of 2nd Semester).

Learning Outcomes

- Critically understand and discuss the process of knowledge construction in Social Work at the present time, namely the challenges of coordination between scientific knowledge, practical knowledge and "indigenous" knowledge;

- Develop a profound discussion on the (re) configuration of the theory of S. Work in contemporary times, in the light of the contributions of thought and current social theory, and respective applications in professional practice;

- Promote a full debate and a current reading on the core values of social work and their influences in the context of research and intervention.

At the end of the curricular unit the doctoral students should be able to critically discuss the major scientific and  contemporary axiological orientations and their respective implications for the production of knowledge and the practice of social work

1. Construction of knowledge in Social Work

1.1. The new settings and debates on the relationship between theory and professional practice: from the scientific knowledge to the "indigenous" knowledge

1.2. Association and dissociation between Social Work and Social Sciences: critical issues

2. Theory of Social Work: Profound Contemporary Debates

2.1. Classical and critical traditions: current reinterpretations and contributions to the understanding of current social issues and the S.W. action

2.2. An integrated theory of Social Work - New perspectives in social thought and theoretical-conceptual  contributions to the (re) construction of knowledge and intervention of contemporary social work

3. Revisit the core values of S. Work: ethical agenda renewed for knowledge and action.
