Teaching Methods

This is a tutorial curricular unit supervised/co-supervised by academic staff of Biology/Geology from the Life Sciences and Earth Sciences Departments. The concepts associated with the research on Education will be analysed and discussed in seminars, whenever possible, with the collaboration of invited teachers/researchers that develop research in Science Education.

Learning Outcomes

Objectives-to introduce the research on education, to highlight its importance in the training of students as future teachers, design, implement an educational research project.

Depending on the grade level in which the students will do the internship teaching, the students who begin with Biology on 1st semester will do the Biology project on Educational Research Project in Biology and Geology I (ERPBG I) and the Geology on 2nd semester in ERPBG II The students who begin with Geology will do the Geology project on ERPBG I and the Biology project ERPBG II

In both projects the students should:

1. Identify a research problem and formulate the objectives

2. Contextualize and demonstrate the importance of the research

3. Search for scientific papers in Sciences Education (Biology/Geology) related with the scientific contents

4. Have the skills to plan, perform the tasks and analyse the data

5. Produce a written report, adequately structured, and make an oral communication.

Syllabus

The role of the research in the training of future teachers.

Quantitative and qualitative research.

The research process: selection and problem contextualization, literature review and critical analysis of the bibliography, formulation of hypotheses and objectives, methodologies, data analysis and reflections on the research limitations and possible developments.
