Recommended Prerequisites

Previous attendance of the curricular unit Acoustics and vibrations in buildings and their envelopes.

Teaching Methods

Part of the classes will be theoretical and practical, where concepts and theory will be lectured, using projection audio-visual media, as well as critical analyses of testing procedures and practical application exercises will be demonstrated in data processing evaluation. In the Laboratorial classes, students will be encouraged to actively take part on acoustic measurements/tests, on test equipment operation and on the resolution of application problems for acousitc data processing with real data.

Learning Outcomes

The initial objective of the curricular unit is to present the main measurement equipments used in noise and vibration tests. The scope of the knowledge will be extended to the main legal and normative aspects in acoustic measurements and to the detailed analysis of different in situ measurements and laboratorial acoustic tests, in order to enable students to:

i) know the main metrological aspects;

ii) know and apply the appropriate normatives when establishing the different test procedures;

iii) understand  the methodologies to analyse, process the registered data and evaluate/present the results of different acoustic tests and measurements.

Acquiring synthesis and analysis capabilities, oral and written communication, problems solving, critical reflection, autonomous learning and practical application of theoretical knowledge.

Syllabus

1. Noise and vibration measurement instrumentation

Acoustic quantities and measurement equipment.

2. Legal and normative aspects

Normatives; Accreditation of testing laboratories; Measurement equipment calibration and metrological control; Methodology for test uncertainty evaluation.

3. In situ acoustic measurements

Measurements in building acoustics: sound insulation between rooms, reverberation time inside a room and building equipment sound levels. Vibration measurements.

4. Laboratorial acoustic tests

Tests for materials and constructive solutions' characterization: evaluation of sound insulation and increment of sound insulation; sound absortion (in reverberant room and with an impedance tube). Measurement of sound power.

5. Other experimental methodologies used in acoustics.
