Recommended Prerequisites

A. Knowledge:

Before beginning the study of this curricular unit, students should already have acquired a set of basic knowledge in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Introduction to Research (optional CU proposed) and Research Seminars (optional CU proposed).

B. Skills and attitudes:

Languages: Students should have the ability to read, understand, write and speak, not only in Portuguese but also in English, which allows them to understand the bibliography and develop their communication abilities.

Information Technologies: ability to use the information technologies for internet access, bibliography search with PubMed, and preparation of oral communications and posters.

Attitudes: Students should demonstrate motivation and ability to self-study. It is also important that students demonstrate that they have critical thinking, openness to continuous and integrated learning and ability to work in group.

Teaching Methods

The student must develop, independently and autonomously, under the supervision of a tutor, a research project in a biomedical area, preferentially multidisciplinary and transversal, addressing in a coherent and integrated manner different aspects of the investigation. The student must contribute to the achievement of the experimental part of the project, in a laboratory environment, to present and interpret the results and propose strategies for further studies. The student will present and discuss the results on a regular basis in group meetings and a CU 'workshop'.
