Classes are mainly expository and communicative. Multi-media will be used.

Learning Outcomes

  This course intends to provide basic Chinese vocabulary (chosen topics; for daily usage); advanced Chinese vocabulary for science and medicine; basic knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine.

  At the end of the course, students should be able to read, comprehend and write the basic Chinese vocabulary (chosen topics; for daily usage); use freely and correctly some frequent expressions (for daily usage); know the advanced Chinese vocabulary for science and medicine; understand some of the most fundamental notions of traditional Chinese medicine.

1.General presentation about this course.
Fundamental aspects of Chinese languages and the history of Mandarin.
Essential points about the pin-yin system and writing of the Chinese characters.
2.Basic vocabulary:
Compliments, names, nationalities, origin
Numbers, days, weeks, months, years
clock hours, locations and directions
transportation, journeys, clothes
food and diets
Philosophy and traditions connected with Medicine.
3.Advanced vocabulary:
institutions and professions connected with Medicine
Anatomy
Physiology and Pathology
Semiology and therapeutics.
Science and technology
4.Considerations about the History of the traditional Chinese Medicine
5.General review
6.Students’ Presentations: reflections/presentations about Chinese culture and/or Chinese Medicine

Assessement
Evaluation is based upon: the student’s performance at the lessons (presence, manifestation of interest, interaction) 20%, homework (mainly copies of the essential words) 20%, presentation about Chinese culture and/or medicine 30%, vocabulary test (final exam) 30%.: 100.0%
