Recommended Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of Paleography is advisable.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical-practical classes, where students are expected to participate actively by presenting and discussing topics and the results of applied research.

Exploring and treating bibliographic and documentary resources from archives, libraries and similar institutions.

Exploring bibliographic and documentary resources in digital reproduction.

Study visits to archives, libraries and institutions with relevant written heritage.

Learning Outcomes

This seminar will enable students to

– master the principles and theoretical issues related to written heritage, especially between the medieval period and the comtemporary era, with an emphasis on Portuguese-speaking countries;

– develop the ability to recognize, identify, evaluate and treat the documentary and bibliographic resources available in archives, libraries, museums and similar institutions;

– strengthen and develop interdisciplinary knowledge, methods and skills, particularly in document analysis and description, within the fields of codicology, paleography, diplomatics, sigillography, ancient books and the history of archives and libraries.

1. Documentary and bibliograhic heritage: principles and cultural meanings.

2. The archaeology of manuscripts: beginnings, production, conservation, circulation and analytical description of codices.

3. Document production in chanceries and public notary offices.

3.1. Authenticating documents: seals.

3.2. Forms and processes of archival history.

4. Incunables and printed books: identification and description.

4.1. Libraries and archives as cultural heritage.
