Teaching Methods
Classes for presentation of the essential concepts with the reflection on the way these concepts were established. Classes for discussion/resolution of problems related to practical situations, orders of magnitude, estimates on the physical quantities concerning the electromagnetism. Classes with experimental demonstrations that illustrate fundamental concepts of electromagnetism. Lectures on complementary topics on applications of electromagnetic theory.
Learning Outcomes
Develop the knowledge of electromagnetism as a fundamental theory of physics.
Develop skills in:
- mathematics, namely infinitesimal calculus;
- the use of bibliography and autonomous study;
- to solve new problems;
- to understand and perform simple experiments of electromagnetism;
- to develop the interest and fondness for physics and the knowledge of the applications of electromagnetism in modern societies.

1- Electrostatic field: Coulomb's eq.; the concept of field; Gauss's law; local and integral equations of the electrostatic field; boundary conditions of E; electrostatic potential; Poisson and Laplace equations; electric field energy; electric dipole and electric dipole energy; electrostatics in dielectric media.
2 - Magnetostatic field: Biot-Savart law; Lorentz and Laplace force; local and integral equations of the magnetostatic field; boundary conditions of field B; potential vector; eq. Poisson's of the potential vector; energy of field B; magnetic dipole and magnetic dipolar energy; magnetostatics in material media.
3 - Electromagnetic field: Faraday-Lenz law; Maxwell's eqs. in the variable regime; electromagnetic waves; Hertz's experience; Poynting theorem and energy and momentum of an electromagnetic wave; eqs. of Lorenz for the potentials.
4 - Analysis of RLC circuits with variable current: i) transient regime and ii) steady regime with alternating current.
