Teaching Methods

Classes involve open theoretical discussion of issues, complemented with the analysis of practical examples and the use of texts, maps and other materials, in addition to empirical issues researched and presented by students.

Learning Outcomes

The student should discuss global development asymmetries, the main actors and spatial expressions of these problems, especially in Africa, South America and Asia, but also in poverty enclaves elsewhere in the world. After conclusion of the course, the student should be able to analyze, understand and interpret the urbanization process in the most precarious global territories, its relationship with world processes as well as with local and regional dynamics. The student should be able to understand critically the different effects of globalization at the local level, as well as some of the alternative experiences of community development.
