Design Studio II - Strategic planning of urban rehabilitation and heritage conservation

Historical and theoretical knowledge of territorial planning and urbanism

Skills in: analysis; theoretical research; synthesis; organization; strategic planning.

Teaching Methods

The development of the Project Work will be done with direct and continuous monitoring of the student and in accordance with the following stages:

Review of Thesis Project prepared at the unit Architectural Research Seminar (theme, objectives, methodologies, case studies, structure and bibliography)

Review and development of the work done in the unit Design Studio IID - Strategic Planning of Urban Rehabilitation and Heritage Conservation;

Writing and revision of the Project Work written and drawn components, according to its specific regulation

Final formatting of the work, reviewing aspects that ensure the effectiveness of communication of the contents.

Learning Outcomes

- Design Lab C as a subtitle with the theme Strategic Planning of Urban Rehabilitation and Heritage Conservation.

- Achievement of a Project Work as a final exam of the master, based on the work done at the unit Design Studio IID - Strategic Planning of Urban Rehabilitation and Heritage Conservation with thematic approaches defined in the unit Architectural Research Seminar;

- Demonstration of research skills and capacity for synthesis and communication of project proposals, crossing knowledge built with design practice and, in particular, with the work done in the unit Design Studio IID - Strategic Planning of Urban Rehabilitation and Heritage Conservation.

Syllabus

The syllabus can vary depending on the thematic focus of the Project Work to develop as final exam of the master degree; however, it fits into the following syllabus of Design Studio IID - Strategic Planning of Urban Rehabilitation and Heritage Conservation, including their topics:

a) Territorial Planning as a Public Policy (Instruments of Territorial Planning and Management: National Policy Programme Planning (NPPP) and Local Land-Use Plans (LLuP). 

b) Policies, Strategies and Tactics in Urban Management (Urban disaggregation; Heritage safeguard in the inner city; Urban rehabilitation; Building rehabilitation; Requalification of public spaces)

c) Urban Morphology and the intervention on the existing city (Urbanistic heritage; Tensions, dialogues and complementarities between the New and the Old)

d) Planning Regulations and Public Space (Public Space; Normative, Permits and Licenses).
