Recommended Prerequisites

All units of the 1st Cycle Studies and Design Studio I, Urbanism, Urbanístics, Humanities.

Historical and theoretical knowledge of architecture, territorial planning and urbanism.

Skills in analysis, synthesis, organization and strategic planning.

Teaching Methods

Lectures: presentation and discussion of concepts and theories relating to the unit syllabus.

Theoretical-practical classes: direct and continuous monitoring of the student in his developing of a practical exercise.

Lectures by DARQ teachers and other professional guests on Urbanism, Architecture, Urban Sociology, and Urban Planning.

Assessment: Continuous (group and individual works on Urban Design, including a report); attendance and participation in discussion sessions.

This continuous assessment allows the student to introduce and manage, critically, whether in collective debate, either on individual achievement of their work, different knowledge learned throughout the course. The exhibition and presentation of work before an invited jury (end of semester) reinforces the need for the student to respond to synthetic and professional programs presented at the Design Studio.

Failure of one phase determines a final negative rating and thus reprobation without special examination.

Learning Outcomes

The Design Studio II initiates the final phase of a path of design simulation that students develop over the Master in Architecture. In this sense, and having regard to its insertion at the end of the 2nd cycle of studies, it provides themes and programs resulting from this learning, to be chosen by the student in order to supplement or enhance his previous path, developed inside or outside DARQ/FCTUC.

In Design Studio IIB - City and [Infra] Structure -, students should develop:

- expertise on Urban Culture and Urban Design.

- knowledge on different instruments and scales of Urban Design.

- knowledge about the problems of urban infra-structuring, mainly the impact of facilities and public spaces in the city development.

Apply this knowledge on a given intervention area, preselected by the teacher, in Portuguese territory or abroad.

Work Placement(s)

No

Syllabus

Students are invited to develop initially, and integrated into working groups, an overall strategy, considering:

- the geographical support of the intervention area;

- the historical development of this area;

- the understanding of the role of the physical preexistences;

- the framework of existing territorial and urban policies;

- architectural programs to analyze and develop;

Secondly, students must develop, individually or in smaller groups, a focus on a particular area of this sector, deepening different scales of urban design and architecture, with particular focus on the (re)design of urban infrastructure, public spaces, and community facilities, which might be relevant for the restructuring and regeneration of this area.

The semester final works will be openly debated, through exhibitions and seminars with experts and citizens, or even through short workshop and think-tank events.
