Recommended Prerequisites

1st Cycle of Studies completed. The domain and practice of architectural design and the use of computer aided design tools
and models construction are considered as determinants for the development of the Design.

Teaching Methods

TP classes are organized as a series of monographic studies that puts in evidence themes and concepts to be developed in the design.

The laboratorial classes consist on the follow-up of the students design with sessions of criticism.

A study trip will allow the on-site examination of relevant design issues within the Design Studio.

The assessment is continuous with intermediate riviews and final evaluation sessions. In this curricular unit there is no appeal examination.

Acquisition of knowledge on Urbanism, Visual Culture, Social and Human Sciences Cosntruction and Tecnologies are requeried.

Learning Outcomes

The Design Studio I C intends, through design, to explore and promote critical reflection on the disciplinary field of architecture and its capacity for political action to promote free access to the city, local identity and overall environment. The pedagogical objectives contribute to the training and autonomy of the design pratice in a context of approximation to the real, namely:

To cement methods of exploration and analysis that lead to consistent design strategies and concepts.

To integrate multidisciplinary knowledge into project practice.

To deepen the ability of project synthesis that leads to the final design.

To explore design concepts through mastery of the means of representation, both visual and verbal.

To master principles of integration, insertion and urban transformation.

Structuring, articulating, modeling and modulating globally complex building spaces.

Resolving consistently the relations of form, matter and construction of globally complex buildings.

Syllabus

The TP teaching component explores project matters transverse to the different scales of intervention which are intended to be conceptualized in the design

Hybrid

The Design Studio acts in an expecting urban context but supported by a consolidated urban structure. An approach of the general and the particular, the city and the matter is intended through 3 exercises that converge to design studio theme.

1st: Study and critical reflection of the urban context and conceptualization of an intervention strategy with insertion of a Public Building. Scales: 1/5000 up to 1/500.

2nd: Urban Proposal with insersion of a Public Building. Scales: 1/2000 up to 1/500.

3rd: Building Design, maximum gross area: 2500 m2. Outdoor spaces, maximum area: 2000m2. Scales: 1/500 up to 1/10

Mid term Exercise: Analysis of relevant buildings to the Theme.
