Recommended Prerequisites

1st Cycle of Studies completed. The ability to draw, to built models and to work with CAD tools. To have the competence of design architectural projects and the knowledge of the theory and history of architecture.

Teaching Methods

Pratical-Theoretical lectures presenting themes and concepts that will be worked in the Design Studio. Practical classes work with the students on the development of his/her project in which the work of the students either in group or individual work.

Field trips to the site, as well as to any other location where the urban or programmatic situation promotes a better understanding of the problems posed by the design studio.

Learning Outcomes

Design Studio I C (DS-IC) "to Densify" will explore the relations between Memory and Architecture.

Concerning the programatic goals, DS-IC pretends to integrate the intervention on built space in the training of the architect, giving answer to one of the great challenges of the contemporary city – the degradation of the urban centers.

The pedagogical goal of the discipline promotes design methods which stimulates:

a) critical reflexion ability on architectural design through its plastic expression systems

b) its relational mechanisms with the site

c) the coherent resolution of the programme

d) the means used to its materialization

e) Coordination of the project

In this sense, to work on the built space, the architectural design should integrate a urban strategy of densification and also explore the building systems that optimize the exisiting structures, the efficiency of the adopted construction options and the control of the formal and material topics.

Syllabus

The syllabus focous on the reflection upon the urban and architectural strategies that integrates memory and history in the transformation of the city, of its public spaces and of its buildings.

Taking the Portuguese city as a reference, we consider that coming back to the center needs a reflection on the existing heritage, on the functional models and on the design methodologies. So, starting from the transformation of a public building we pretend to rehabilitate the city and its public space.

The complexity of the intervention on the consolidated city, on its buildings and social structures relies on the acquisition of knowledge in the complementary scientific areas as Urbanism, Social and Human Sciences and Building and Technology. So, we will have activities coordinated with the disciplines that support these areas and topics.

This approach will also be articulated with Design Studio IA and IB in the intervention area, in the design process and in the evaluation system.
