Elective
2nd Cycle Studies - Mestrado
Recommended Prerequisites
1st Cycle of Studies completed. The ability to draw, to built models and to work with CAD tools. To have the competence of design architectural projects and the knowledge of the theory and history of architecture.
Teaching Methods
Theoretical lectures presenting themes and concepts that will be worked in each Design Studio. Practical classes in which the work of the students will be tutored by each teacher, either group or individual work
Field trips that promotes a better understanding of the problems posed by each design studio
The evaluation will be continuous, during both semesters, with mid term and final examinations
The participation of the students in classes will also be evaluated
There shall be no exam.
Learning Outcomes
The pedagogical goal of the discipline promotes a working method which stimulates a critical reflexion ability on architectural design through its plastic expression systems, its relational mechanisms with the site, the coherent resolution of the programme and the means used to its materialization. Along this process the ‘concept’ is valued as a framework for the evolution of the design, with particular importance on the domain and experimental nature of the means of expression and efficiency of construction options adopted.
The program articulates, in an exercise of long duration, an architectural design increasing complexity that brings together different scales and design problems. Thus, an understanding of the diverse knowledge offered by each course will be effectively integrated in a design solution.
In an intermediate phase a short exercise will be given to the students, to test their knowledge. Architectural design themes and programmes are taught in different Design Studios.
Work Placement(s)
NoSyllabus
The syllabus deals with a group of public equipments, articulated between them and occupying a common urban space. This will be divided into three authonomous design units with different programmes:
- Health and Senior Residence equipment; Service Programme with public support areas; Social and Educational Programme.
Different methodologies and working scales will be employed, supporting the development of the proposals: initial group work to define and acquire a comprehensive understanding of the territory ( topography, morphology ) 1:1000/1:500; individual work to articulate each given Programme 1:200/1:100; individual definition of the building systems and its detailing 1:50/1:1.
To achieve these goals, the following competencies are required: Programmatic/Functional Structure; Formal/Spatial Structure; Building system/Architectural Language; Synthetic ability to graphically represent and communicate the solution.
