Architectural Design I; Architecture and Digital Project I.

Teaching Methods

The course is taught in a 4 hours weekly class, combining:

- theoretical presentations in a lecture format, fostering the collective debate about the subjects;

- presentation of the assignments with tutorial demonstration of the tools and techniques involved in its resolution, using video projection;

- development of individual and group exercises, combining individual learning processes with the requirement for teamwork;

- practical assistance to the work in progress;

- production of physical models/prototypes through CAD/CAM technologies and/or processes;

- lectures with external guests and visits to reference entities.

Learning Outcomes

Taking place in the 2nd s, APD2 looks for introducing the students to the digital processes associated with:
i) conception (advanced modeling, parametric and algorithmic design…)
ii) Construction (computer aided manufacturing, or fabrication – CAM)
The main goals are:
1) Get to know the state of the art of the CAM technologies and equipments (e.g., additive, subtractive and
formative fabrication, robotic assembly…);
2) Acquire a practical skills on using advanced CAD processes for design conception in architecture
3) Acquire practical skills on using CAM processes for design materialization
4) Consolidate a critical conscious about the potentials and limitations of developing an architectural project in digital media, as well as about the role of the architect in the digital era.

Work Placement(s)

No

Syllabus

1) Description of the computer aided manufacturing technologies and equipments, and presentation of references from practice;

2) Parametric design: design intention, geometric parametrization, associativity, logic structures, algorithmic definition;

3) Digital fabrication: preparation of models and drawings according to the different digital fabrication technologies (ex.: creation of STL files, geometric subdivision of forms; flattening and nesting techniques…);

4) Execution of digitally fabricated models;

5) Graphic/electronic presentation of the project.
