Recommended Prerequisites

Knowledge of Portuguese language and at least one foreign language, preferably English.

Teaching Methods

There will be theoretical-practical lectures and seminars with each of the unit’s academic staff.

These sessions of theoretical-practical lectures and seminars will happen in April and May.

Doctoral students should develop in relatively short time (over the four-week interval between each set of classes on the same guideline theme) research work within the syllabus points of the Seminar.

The unit coordinator will monitor work, on a tutorial basis, during the time of its completion.

Learning Outcomes

The uc aims to continue the previous Seminar in Architectural and Cultural Studies and to provide doctoral students with an updated and comprehensive overview of the most relevant scientific research, recently developed in Portugal and abroad, in the field of Architectural and Cultural Studies.

An account will be given on relevant doctoral theses, recent or ongoing research projects, the most important publications and on new research methodologies.

Another objective of the curricular unit is to allow doctoral students to get to know the faculty and the individual interests of each teacher in view to selecting a potential supervisor for the dissertation.

Emphasis will be given to the development of the following skills:

- Criteria in collecting information and research materials;

- Ability to develop critical reasoning and argumentation;

- Originality;

- Ability to clearly expose ideas;

- Ability to write fluently and objectively in Portuguese or English.

Syllabus

It is intended to provide students with a critical, updated and expanded overview on topics and research methodologies in Architectural and Cultural Studies presented during the Seminar of the first Semester.

Syllabus:

e. Para-architectural practices;

f. The artistic avant-gardes and neo-avant-gardes of the twentieth century;

g. Scenography practices and theatrical culture in architecture.

Continuous Assessment
Evaluation will focus on research and systematization work, within the seminar guidelines. Emphasis will be given to the assessment of the following skills: - Criteria in collecting information and research materials; - Ability to develop critical reasoning and argumentation; - Originality; - Ability to clearly expose ideas; - Ability to write fluently and objectively in Portuguese or English: 100.0%
