Teaching Methods

The seminar will be based on a theoretical component, with resort to dynamic audiovisual media to exemplify the presented subjects, and on a more practical component directed towards the use of software related to the subject of teaching, under tutoring in the learning and evaluation of progress, solving exercises related to specific problems of the profession of archaeologis.

Learning Outcomes

Students should:

Acquire knowledge of the basic functioning principles of the Geographical Information Systems;

Know their potential of application to Archaeology;

Encourage, through various specific examples, the use of GIS software through a progressive learning of the tools needed for this use.

Syllabus

1. Introduction to the Geographical Information Systems.
2. The generalization of the GIS as archaeological tools.
3. Introduction to the Quantum GIS software.
3.1. Open Source software and the GRASS software.
3.2 Fundamentals of georeferencing and coordinate systems.
3.3. File formats used in QGIS.
4. Basic tools for storage and representation of geographical data.
5. GIS's and spatial analysis in Archaeology.
5.1. Concept and potential.
5.2. Vector spatial analysis.
5.3. Buffers, intersections, Voronoi's diagram and Delaunay's triangulation, heat maps as tools for vector analysis in archaeological research.
