Teaching Methods

Lectures with detailed exposition, using visual aids, presenting the concepts, principles and theories. Theoretical-practical classes in which the students, with the guidance of teachers, become familiar with geologic maps, with the geological materials (rocks and minerals) and applied exercises of Engineering Geology. The evaluation is made on the final exam.

Learning Outcomes

Provide the students with fundamental knowledge of the geology to understand the origin, the evolution, and the structure of the Earth and the surface processes of alteration of the rocks, of erosion, of transport and deposition in the formation of the soils. Rock types and the constituent minerals. Characteristics and classifications of soils and physical indexes to give the relative composition of the three phases of the soils (solid, liquid and gas). The bases, objectives and methodology of the geological and geotechnical studies, applied to various kinds of engineering works is presented. Interactions between the geology, engineering works, geological materials and environment. The deposition of geological materials in embankments improvement and control.

Work Placement(s)

No
