Recommended Prerequisites

Students, to attend learning outcomes in this seminar, should have basic knoledge about Media History and they should have a global understanding about the main historical periods from 19th and 20th centurys.

Teaching Methods

The seminarial scheme requires the necessary balance between lectures, where teachers expose basic content, and discussion of texts and on topics previously prepared by the students.

Learning Outcomes

This seminar has as general objectives:

1. Promote the research in the field of History of the Media;

2. Develop an understanding of media in the light of a historical framework phenomena;

3. Framing the media study in social, cultural and political contexts;

4. Mastering specific topics of Media and Journalism in Portugal and in the Europe, relating them to the great historical movements.

1. 19th Century: the golden age of press

1.1. The great movements of opinion and the press

1.2. From the man of letters to the intellectual

1.3. The influence of Literature on the press

1.4.The role of professional organizations and conferences of journalists

 

XX th Century: the triumph of media attention

2.1.The writing newspaper, the radio and the television and major transformations in information and communication

2.2.The journalism and the study of the great event / show

2.3.The journalism and the look on a character / political or mundane

2.4. Journalism and the picture and sound

 

3. Current issues being debated press freedom; public service; pluralism and diversity; image culture, public and private.
