Recommended Prerequisites

i) Basic knowledge of the historical and cultural context covered by the seminar (from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century) and the diachronic evolution of Portuguese Literature.

ii) Appropriate use of technical terminology in the domain of literary and cultural studies.

iii) Knowledge of research protocols: A literature search (using traditional tools and new information technologies); formulation of working hypotheses; critical evaluation of the the existent bibliography; methods of argumentation and proof.

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods focus on the seminar model, combining the professor’s expository presentations, according to the profile of magisterial lesson, and students independent work which will  materialize in a short written essay and / or book reviews, the preparation of contents to be presented during theoretical sessions, research and selection of relevant literature in order to prepare a final paper. It is intended, therefore, to develop and strengthen research skills at an individual level and methodological accuracy.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester, students should be able to:
i) know in depth the evolution of Portuguese literature from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century;

ii) relate the historical and cultural context to the specific characteristics of the literary production at issue;

iii) integrate knowledge acquired in reading and interpretation of literary texts, identifying problems and selecting the most appropriate critical perspective ;

iv) mobilize skills and research methods associated with the fields of literary theory, history and literary criticism, cultural studies and Interartes, under an openly interdisciplinary perspective;

v) critically reflect upon the uses and forms of texts appropriation and sharing in our contemporary times;

vi) plan, develop and discuss research, using appropriate theoretical and methodological tools.

1. Literary theory and cultural history (Middle Ages - the eighteenth century.).
2. Space, identity and practices of power in medieval historiography.
3. Writing and Empire: variations of the epic model.
4. Literature of the Portuguese Expansion: Occidentalism and cultural diversity.
5. Prophecy, History and Fifth Empire: Vieira and the transnational horizon of Portuguese language.
6. The production of cultural memory: uses and appropriations of the classics.
