Recommended Prerequisites

Portuguese and possibly other languages needed to scientifical and pedagogical outcomes.

Teaching Methods

1) Theoretical exposés aimed at providing knowledge and information, ground for discussion, adaptation and confrontation of models and research practices.

2) Exchange of experiences in connection with the specificities of the research project.

3) Monitoring of the development of the research project.

Learning Outcomes

The general objective is to take doctoral student deepening his/her knowledge about research and reflection, both in the most recent critical developments and in its historical impact, made in Portugal and abroad in specific fields of Modern Languages, Cultures, Literature and Translation; and organizing and supporting the research project.

At the end of the seminar, student should have the capacity to formulate, substantiate and develop the research question and the chosen methodologies; organize and schedule the work of collecting information and material for study; consolidate and expand the critical bibliography and other resources, treating and systematizing them; properly apply the various techniques for the elaboration of a critical discourse; plan and schedule the project.

Syllabus

1) Specificity of scientific research in Modern Languages, Cultures, Literatures and Translation.

2) Formulation of objectives and survey of issues.

3) Identification of the methodology and types of investigation: rules and models, theoretical framework.

4) Data collection work. Treatment of primary and secondary sources, databases: registration, archiving, systematization and information retrieval.

5) Analysis of results.

6) Formulation of conclusions.

7) Directions for developing, writing and presenting the research project.

Qualification Exam, which consists of the presentation of a consolidated thesis project, to be evaluated by a panel constituted for the purpose, according to the study plan : 100.0%
